Microsoft Clarity Study: AI Traffic Delivers Up to 3X Higher Conversion Rates Than Some Traffic Channels
Is AI traffic more valuable than Google traffic? A study reveals higher conversion rates
For a long time, Google was the primary gateway through which customers discovered websites. Social media later became another important source of traffic.
Today, a new channel is growing rapidly: AI Traffic.
Tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity are becoming part of the search journey, and some of these interactions now lead users to websites.
But the more important question for a business owner is not: How much traffic comes from AI? but rather: Is this traffic more valuable?
Microsoft Clarity Study: AI Traffic Is Growing Rapidly
Microsoft Clarity analyzed data from more than 1,200 publishing and news websites over an eight-month period and found that traffic coming from AI platforms increased by 155.6%, compared with 24% growth in Search traffic, 21.5% in Social traffic, and 14.9% in Direct traffic.
Despite this growth, AI traffic still accounted for less than 1% of total traffic across the sample analyzed by Clarity. This means its overall volume remains relatively small, but it is growing at a much faster rate.
| Channel | Traffic Growth |
|---|---|
| AI | +155.6% |
| Search | +24% |
| Social | +21.5% |
| Direct | +14.9% |
But the Real Surprise Isn’t Traffic Volume
What makes the findings particularly interesting is the conversion rate.
According to the study, visits from LLMs generated a 1.66% sign-up conversion rate, compared with 0.15% from Search and 0.46% from Social.
For subscriptions, LLM traffic generated a 1.34% conversion rate, compared with 0.55% from Search and 0.37% from Social.
This suggests that, within the sample analyzed, AI traffic was not simply another emerging source of visitors. It also demonstrated higher action-taking potential than some traditional channels.
| Conversion Metric | LLMs | Search | Direct | Social |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sign-up CTR | 1.66% | 0.15% | 0.13% | 0.46% |
| Subscription CTR | 1.34% | 0.55% | 0.41% | 0.37% |
Why Might AI Traffic Be More Likely to Convert?
One important difference lies in the nature of the search itself.
When a user types a query into a traditional search engine, they do not necessarily explain exactly what they need.
But when a user asks an AI tool something like: “What is the best SEO strategy for an ecommerce store targeting customers in Saudi Arabia?”
they provide much more context and a clearer description of their needs.
The AI tool may then provide a tailored response along with a specific set of sources, websites, or businesses, rather than presenting the user with a long list of search results.
This type of search experience may mean that some users arrive at a website at a more advanced stage of the decision-making journey.
However, it is important not to generalize the study’s findings to every website or business. The research was based on a specific sample and measured specific types of conversions.
What Does This Mean for Business Owners?
If your customers are increasingly using AI tools to research products and services, having your brand appear during that journey could become an important marketing opportunity.
This is where specialized SEO content, reliable information, strong service and product pages, and a trustworthy digital presence can all play a role.
Together, these elements can create a stronger foundation for your brand to appear across emerging search experiences.
This does not mean you should abandon Google in favor of ChatGPT.
A better approach is to build a strong SEO strategy that supports both Google and AI Search.
Are You Measuring AI Traffic on Your Website?
Start by comparing the performance of visitors coming from AI tools with your other traffic channels.
Don’t look only at traffic volume. Also evaluate:
- Conversion Rate
- Leads
- Purchases
- Revenue
You may discover that a relatively small traffic source generates more value than you expected.
The Microsoft Clarity study points to a trend worth watching: AI traffic is not only growing rapidly, but it also demonstrated higher conversion rates than some traditional channels within the sample analyzed.
As a result, the question is no longer simply “How many people are reaching my website?”
It is also:
“Where are these visitors coming from, and what value are they generating for my business?”
As AI Search continues to evolve, improving your brand’s visibility across these emerging search experiences may become an increasingly important part of a modern SEO strategy.
